Rationale - Project B

I decided to do Geo-narrative as my project B. My first decision was data visualisation, I came across a number of problems and I found my data was not enough. I was also worried that the data I had would not be interesting enough and therefore not show data visualisation. So the Geo-narrative seemed to be the best option for me. I chose to use a story instead of a essay-like argument or documentary account. As a story was the best way I thought I could use a number of photos the way I wanted to. I had a number of stories I could have used but most were set in the one place which would not work as we needed to show more of a geo-narrative. I found I didn’t have enough time to write a new story because I had changed my mind on which project I was going to use. I should have been more organised with which project I wanted to do but in the end I thought I would succeed more in a narrative. So I used an already written story I had.  I decided to use photos in the way that showed part of my story and created a sort of visual story, rather than photos relating to my story. So for instance the photo I used for the park bench, that part of the chapter had a reference of a park bench. I wanted that photo to be that park bench in my story, rather than just a photo of a park bench.

I referenced all the photos I used and I pulled them from flickr as I wanted to make sure they had creative commons rights. I selected each photo carefully to match my story. I didn’t want any bright looking photos as my story isn’t happy, so therefore having the dark photos creates the dark feel of the story to the viewer. The four photos I used as part of the criteria were my own. I felt that re-mixing someone else’s photo would take the authenticity out of the original photo. I found it was also easier to take my own photos, as I knew what photos I wanted to use.  Although I found this a little hard because it wasn’t as easy as pulling them down from a website, some of my photos I visually went out and took so I had that exact photo I wanted.

I wanted to make my story original and unpredictable. I want the reader to be guided in the different parts of Sydney and to be surprised where they end up.  I suppose it is different to other works in the field because it is original and creative. Although I didn’t really explore Google maps as much as I would have liked I still think my story and areas of choice came together quite well.

I didn’t really follow a design pattern, I suppose the type of images I used relate together as they symbolise different parts of the story and they don’t all come from the one artist.
